Pasquale Melise of Norfolk, Va., formerly of Farmingdale, passed away on Jan. 1, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Rose Baldizzi Melise. Devoted father of Patricia Jeanne Melise and her significant other and his friend Joe Thain who visited him every day during his final days. Cherished grandfather of Katherine Marie Gluchowski Fedor, her husband James, and their son (his great-grandson) Andrew, and granddaughter Kristina Rose Gluchowski Fulton and her husband Jon. Special friend to Bob Esposito who nurtured him after his wife’s passing and will always be a true friend. He loved horse racing, baseball, and casinos. He spent many hours at Belmont Park Raceway and on a bus to Atlantic City. He bought lottery tickets until the day before he was hospitalized. Former diesel engine mechanic for Bush Terminal Railway and NY Dock Railway. He had a lifelong love affair with New York, especially Brooklyn and the Yankees. His main source of nutrition was cake, and he has been known to frequent several different bakeries daily! Interment was at Pinelawn Memorial Park. A former resident of Amityville, Graney was a member of St. Kilians Parish in Farmingdale and a member of the Farmingdale Seniors. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and many friends. A private mass was held in South Hadley, Mass., where she resided. A private burial was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Lillian Ketcham Hicks, 95, of Fort Pierce, Fla. passed away on Feb. 6. Mrs. Hicks was born in Farmingdale on March 24, 1918 to Roswell C. and Margaret Jahn Ketcham. She had been a resident of Florida since 1962.

 

Lillian leaves behind her daughter, Susan Hicks Collins of Fort Pierce; sons, Frank G. Hicks III of Fort Pierce, William John Hicks of Springfield, Mass., Alan Ross Hicks of Noblesville, Ind. and Sean G. Hicks of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Heather Renee

Hicks and William John Hicks; and two great-grandchildren, Zander Hicks and Willow Hicks.

Virginia “Ginny” Ehrlinger, 91, passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family on Feb. 14, 2014. Beloved wife of 71 years to Andrew. Loving mother of Carole Napolitano (John), Richard (Fran), Teresa Santoro (Mike), Patricia Maher (John), Kevin (Denise) and Dennis (Mary). Devoted grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Dear sister of Dorothy Kreutzberg. Retired in 1974 from Grumman Aerospace. A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at St. Martin of Tours RC Church, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery. Members of the Farmingdale Fire Department mourned the loss of Joseph Schweitzer, on Feb. 28, 2014. Schweitzer joined the Water, Witch Engine & Hose Company No. 1 on March 25, 1961, where he would later move up the ranks to become Rescue Squad Captain in 1966. Eventually, Schweitzer would work his way up to Captain of his Company in 1974, and would be named Chief of the Fire Department in 1975. He was on the Board of Commissioners from 1994-2009, and was the Chairperson of the Fire Department’s Fund Drive committee. He became a Life Member in 1986 and a 50-year member in 2011. Schweitzer was also a Fire Investigator with the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s office, Chairman of the Village Zoning Board, and cherished husband of Rosemary, his wife for 49 years. Beloved father of James and Peter. Loving brother of Ellen Maggand and a fond grandfather of Alex. 

 

A Firematic Service was held at the Farmingdale Firehouse, with the cremation services held privately. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made the Farmingdale Fire Department, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, or Nassau University Medical Center Burn Unit. Stephen Loyd von Hasseln of Long Island, New York, and Coral Springs, Fla., died peacefully March 5, 2014, in hospice at Coral Springs.

 

Born June 12th, 1949, in Manhattan, Steve demonstrated an early fascination for everything mechanical or electronic: as soon as he could toddle he was disassembling clocks and locks to see how they worked, much to the consternation of his parents. This would lead later to a career in physical security, capped by his recognition by his peers as an ASIS International Certified Security Professional.
